Thermal spraying is a group of processes wherein a feedstock material is heated and propelled as individual particles or droplets onto a surface. The thermal spray gun generates the necessary heat by using combustible gases or an electric arc. As the materials are heated, they are changed to a plastic or molten state and are confined and accelerated by a compressed gas stream to the substrate. The particles strike the substrate, flatten, and form thin platelets (splats) that conform and adhere to the irregularities of the prepared substrate and to each other. As the sprayed particles impinge upon the surface, they cool and build up, splat by splat, into a laminar structure forming the thermal spray coating.

Thermal spray coating is a well-established coating technique comparing with other coating processes. The advantages of thermal spray coating comparing with hard chrome, physical vapour deposition (PVD), chemical vapour deposition (CVD) are:

  • high deposition rate
  • low heat input process
  • proven technology
  • variety of coating materials
  • high degree of repeatability
  • resource of utilization
  • favorable economics

Thermal spray technology and coatings solve critical problems in demanding environments. They provide “solutions” to problems involving repair, wear, high temperature and aqueous corrosion, and thermal protection. Thermal spray can also be used to manufacture net-shapes, advanced sensors and materials for the biomedical and energy/environmental sectors. These and other emerging applications take advantage of the rapid and cost-effective capabilities of thermal spray technology in the OEM and repair industries.

The thermal spray coating technology has been used in various industry ranges from aerospace to electronic industry and the utilization of this technology is growing fast in the industrial country. The market of thermal spray coating in Indonesia is widely opened, but there still few utilization from the industry and thermal spray workshop due to the limitation of technology and equipment.

This course:

(i) provides a thorough grounding and understanding of thermal spray processes, (ii) presents the complex scientific concepts in terms of simple physical models, and (iii) integrates this knowledge to practical applications and accepted thermal spray practices.

Dr.Eng. Budi Prawara (Peneliti dan Praktisi LIPI bidang heat treatment and thermal spray coating)

Dr. Eng. Budi Prawarais graduated from Material Engineering (Thermal Spray Coating) University of the Ryukyus Japan for his Doctorate program. He work as researcher at research center of electric power and mechatronics – LIPI (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia) and his structural position is as head of Subdivision of mechatronic facilities. His core expertise is material engineering and surface engineering(rekayasa permukaan).  Related to training, Dr. Eng. Budi Prawara has taught  training class on topics related to Thermal Spray Coating, including heat treatment. As researcher he has researched numerous number such as Heat treatment to steel AISI H13 with process of Austempering, Tempering and Martempering, Defect influence at Thermal Spray Coating to Thermal Properties, heat treatment of Thermal Spray Coating with process of Spark Plasma Sintering, Deposition of Ceramic Matrix Composite Coating with HVOF Thermal Spray Coating for worn out and impact resistance application, Heat Treatment of Ni-Base Self Flux Alloy (SFA) Coatings by Spark Plasma Sintering, Station Charging System for electric Motor, designing of Cooling System at Dies High Pressure Die Casting/HPDC, designing of Thermal Spray Coating with High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) System, designing of Dies HPDC at otomotive component, etc., and he has published its to academics media/journal and has spoken at seminars or conferences in Indonesia and abroad.
