Menghitung nilai kerugian adalah salah satu dimensi penting yang sering diabaikan dalam perencanaan pencegahan kejahatan, baik dilingkungan masyarakat maupun institusi, organisasi, perusahaan , beberapa praktisi lebih memahami  tentang biaya langsung dari dampak kejahatan (nilai harta benda yang dicuri, biaya kerugian waktu kerja, biaya perawatan medis akibat kejahatan, atau santunan yang harus dikeluarkan akibat terjadinya kejahatan. Hal itulah yang selalu berada dalam benak ketika kita berfikir tentang kejahatan. Kemudian keputusan yang diambill adalah memperkuat dinding pengaman, menambah kunci gembok, atau memperkuat /menambah jumlah security. Upaya tersebut merupakan bentuk pengamanan bersifat fisik.

Perkembangan lingkungan global secara langsung maupun tidak langsung mempengaruhi  bentuk serta dimensi ancaman dan gangguan keamanan dari waktu ke waktu dengan keragaman resiko dan dampaknya.

Perubahan wujud dan bentuk ancaman yang semakin komplek baik dalam bentuk fisik, non fisik ,terorganisir,syndikat termasuk ancaman pada proses usaha sebagai indikasi tingkat persaingan usaha yang semakin ketat  dengan memanfaatkan kemajuan teknologi.

Berbagai kerugian yang dialami oleh institusi, organisasi, perusahaan  yang  justru berasal  dari potensi  kerawanan di dalam lingkungannya sendiri, yaitu dalam proses produksi yang dilakukan (core business) dan mungkin  berasal dari fungsi – fungsi  business  dalam  lingkup marketing, human resources, inventory dlsb.

Bentuk pelanggaran ,kejahatan tersebut tak dapat lagi dijangkau oleh aktivitas pengamanan fisik (konvensional) .Mencermati peran security/Satuan Pengamanan sebagai ujung tombak pengamanan (garda terdepan)yang kini akan dihadapkan  pada berbagai ancaman baik yang bersifat eksternal maupun  internal  (dalam proses produksi), sudah waktunya para pihak dalam mengantisipasi ancaman tersebut dengan upaya berkomitmen untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pengamanan non fisik dengan manajemen  pencegahan kerugian “Loss prevention”.
