INTRODUCTION :

This course focuses on corrosion – from either internal or external source – and its potential problem, and the protection methods to stop or control them. Review on corrosion and technique by which it can be identified, monitored and controlled will be given in detail. Active participation is encouraged through case studies and examples especially on the use of painting and coatings, transformer-rectifier of impressed current, magnesium, zinc and alum sacrificial anodes for external protection, and the injection of corrosion inhibitors and biocides for internal corrosion control.

Pre-Requisite

NONE. No previous training in corrosion control is required. However, to gain the most from this course, a basic understanding of physics, chemistry and basic unit operations will be helpful.

Course Content

  • Review of oil & gas surface production facility and operations.
  • Review of metallic materials used in surface production facility and pipelines and the corrosion problem usually happen.
  • Case studies and examples of oil & gas material failure caused by corrosion from internal and external source.
  • Uniform, galvanic and localized corrosion failures.
  • Internal corrosion of pipeline, vessel and processing equipment caused by sour component, H2S, CO2, organic acid, brine, and the SRB (sulfate reducing bacteria).
  • External corrosion of underground, underwater and under-seawater pipeline and structure caused by impurities in soil and water environment.
  • External corrosion of topside structure caused by marine atmosphere.
  • Basic electrochemistry of corrosion process, Ohm’s law and the corrosion rate.
  • Corrosion control and prevention with painting & coatings and the cathodic protection.
  • Measurement of corrosion potential and corrosion current.
  • Protection with sacrificial anode and impressed current.
  • Understanding NACE Standard RP-01-69 to stop external corrosion attack.
  • Requirement, design and criteria of cathodic protection.
  • Sacrificial anode specification, installation and construction.
  • Testing, monitoring, and inspection of cathodic protection.
  • Inspection and maintenance of transformer-rectifier and sacrificial anode.
  • Field test, measurement techniques and instrument.
  • Data recording and evaluation of cathodic protection system.
  • Case studies of corrosion control and prevention with cathodic protection.
  • Internal corrosion problem in the pipeline and surface facility.
  • Oil/gas/water fluid properties and the corrosion tendency.
  • Deterioration by H2S, CO2, and acidic corrosive components.
  • Pipeline leakage and rupture by microbial induced corrosion.
  • Corrosion caused by SRB and the pitting mechanism.
  • Corrosion caused by oxygen penetration.
  • Examples and case studies of equipment corrosion damage and pipeline leakage.

  • SRB control with biocides and the selection of suitable and low risk biocide formula.
  • Dosage and injection methods of biocides.
  • Oxygen control by de-aeration and chemical injection, and the selection of suitable oxygen scavenger chemicals.
  • Dosage and injection methods of oxygen scavenger.
  • Safety in the use of chemicals for internal corrosion prevention.
  • Review of gas dehydration process and operations.
  • Internal corrosion problem in glycol contactor (dehydration) unit.

Ir. Hilman Ahmad, DCE., an Independent Consultant in industrial oil and gas, member of the Society of Indonesian Petroleum Engineers, who manage the Industrial Oil & Gas Education Center for Professionals and has been practicing production operation & safety and corrosion control engineering in Indonesia for more than twenty-five years. He post-graduated from Tokyo Institute of technology (sponsored by UNESCO) in 1977. He joined in-field-practice program at Nippon Kokan Steel Company & Research Center Kawasaki, Japan for production facility design & construction and corrosion prevention & control in 1983, and collaborated with Cormon Industrial Research Center Brighton UK for on-line corrosion monitoring development in 2000.He has been delivering consultative course in production operation, maintenance & safety and corrosion control for personnel from Oil & Gas Company and Petrochemical Industry since 1979.

DESCRIPTION TRAINING PIPELINE

Maintaining the ageing infrastructure such as underground pipelines is a challenge to facility owners worldwide. Dr. Ir. Endra Joelianto is an expert in control engineering. His outstanding research is: Hybrid Control Systems, Discrete Event Control Systems, Petri Nets Analysis and Application on PLC, Robust PID Controller, Advanced Process Control, Industrial Automation using PLC/DCS. He received first degree (Ir.) in Engineering Physics in 1990 from Department of Engineering Physics, ITB and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) in Control Engineering in 2001 from Department of Engineering,The Australian National University, Australia.
He is coordinator of Intelligent Control and Automation, and founder of PLC Research Group, Laboratorium Instrumentasi dan Kontrol (LINK), Departemen Teknik Fisika, Institut Teknologi Bandung. He was the founder and the director of Schneider-OMRON PLC Training Center, Maranatha Christian University, Bandung.  The Schneider-OMRON PLC Training Center has cooperation with PT. Schneider Electric Indonesia, PT. OMRON Corporation Japan, Invensys WONDERWARE. He was the project leader for TPSDP Retooling Program Batch II-DIKNAS for Training Program on “INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION USING PLC” 2004 and Co-provider for the same retooling program Batch II on “INDUSTRIAL CONTROL AND AUTOMATION” by PT. Cahaya Sumirat, Bandung. In 2005, he leads the retooling project entitled PLC for Industrial Control and Automation at the Department of Engineering Physics, ITB

TRAINING  OBJECTIVES

The function of a pressure safety valve is to protect pressure vessels, ping systems, exchanger, boiler and other equipment from pressures exceeding their design pressure by more that a fixed predetermined amount. The permissible amount of overpressure is covered by various codes and is a function of the type of equipment and the conditions causing the overpressure. Failure of safety valve can cause cathastropic accident. Periodically inspection, testing and repair is one of the most important element that the safety valve work properly. Pressure Safety Valve course explains how safety valve and relief functions and how to maintains and ensure long life operation.

Pipeline system mean all parts of physical facilities through which gas trasnported, include pipe, valve, appurtenances attached to pipe, compressor, unit, metering station, regulator station, deliverability and holder. Ir. Deddy Nugraha is a dedicated experienced fulltime trainer and technical consultant since 2002. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from ITB, Bandung. He has worked nationally in a wide variety of industries including: technology, aerospace, utilities, auditing, mining and institutions thus engaged as a corporate consultant.
